First Impressions:
Coming into the village of Loudonville on state route 39 which is Main Street through town, you are greeted with a small town that caters to tourists in the area. The first thing that you notice is Loudonville’s very well-kept historic buildings. Several have been recently updated, and are inviting and unique-welcoming you in as you walk the town streets visiting the shops and restaurants. Some of the highlights off Main Street include Lingenfelter Jewelers, Hanover House Diner, Four Seasons,and Central Park- which have public restrooms across the street, a great perk for such a small town! If you take a quick turn onto Water Street you will see the newly renovated Ohio Theatre and Opera House showing movies on the weekends. You don’t want to miss this great little find. Also, save room for ice cream from Stela’s Ice Cream Shoppe,if you’re a coffee drinker try the coffee and cream- a small coffee with a dip of salty caramel ice cream, AMAZING!
Ohio’s Canoe Capital:
The population of Loudonville is just under 3,000 according to the 2000 census, but that doesn’t keep it from having a large impact in the area. Loudonville is nicknamed the “Canoe Capital of Ohio” for the many canoe liveries along the Mohican River. As you head down the Mohican corridor of Wally Road, you will not only see many liveries and drop off/pick up points, but several great campgrounds; including the Mohican Reservation, where My Town Today stopped by to check out and pick up a pair of water shoes in their general store! There are no shortage of great water activities and friendly faces to serve you in the “Canoe Capital of Ohio”.
Mohican State Park:
Another great perk of visiting Loudonville is its proximity to Mohican State Park. The Park offers great activities year round from hiking and canoeing to cross country skiing! It boasts 1,110-acres and is adjacent to the 4,525-acre state forest for more area to explore this area’s natural beauty, such as the dramatic Clear Fork Gorge and Hemlock Forest. But what really stood out about this State Park was its lodge. The Mohican Lodge is situated on Pleasant Hill Lake, and is truly not what you may expect from a State Park Lodge. This beautiful building has newly renovated rooms, on site restaurants, indoor/outdoor pool and lake activities for very reasonable prices. This is a great option to stay the weekend while visiting Loudonville, in addition to other great bed and breakfasts and Inns also offering great accommodations in the area.
