Upon arrival in Roscoe Village, I was overtaken with excitement of the charm of this historic gem. Roscoe Village is an 1830’s restored Canal town that transports you back in time with its display of living history buildings. But what makes Roscoe Village truly special are its shops and restaurants located in the historic buildings of the village.
For example, The Warehouse 1838, (now a great restaurant) which used to backup to the canal (where OH- 16 is now located) and the locks, would open up for the cargo boats underneath this historic building. Also, the Medberry Marketplace has one of the best salads you will ever try from the deli. And don’t forget to stop in at Ohio State of Mind where great locally made products are showcased.
The reason this is extraordinary is that Roscoe Village had the foresight to combine their unique shopping experiences with the living history, to truly give visitors a remarkable experience that will leave you smiling. You can simply walk through the village and peruse at your leisure, or stop in at the Visitors Center to purchase tickets to walk through the living history tours, or take the time to go on the Monticello III for a Horse-Drawn Canal Boat Ride to get the full experience of Canal life in the 1830s!
Three Rivers, Flags and Mysteries:
Coshocton is a city of roughly 11,000 citizens located about 60 miles East of Columbus in East-Central Ohio. It is a special area not only for its rich history, but because it is where the Walhonding and Tuscarawas rivers meet to form the Muskingum River, making many of the advertisments seen in the area, “Three Rivers.” This natural beauty lends to the tourism in the area for various water activities as well as the Canal History on the Rivers. Part of that history is Coshocton’s Old Stone Fort Mystery. This small fort is believed to be built during the Revolutionary War by Pierre d’Iberville(Lasalle’s Successor), and to possibly be the oldest structure in existence in Ohio. But the dating of the building, and who built it has several theories. This is a unique stop on the main strip of Roscoe Village, and not your typical Visitors Center, as it also tells the history of the Annin Flag Company, and the history of this amazing Wedding on Top of a Flagpole!
Make a Trail of it:
Coshocton and Roscoe Village teamed up to create a fun way to hunt for unique items, antiques, farm inspired decor, and Ohio made items with Antique and Unique Shopping Trail Passport. Stop at any of the participating shops and pick up a passport, and if you visit all twelve, you will receive a free gift from the Coshocton Visitors Bureau!
The Shopping Trail Passport is wonderful as it will take you an a tour of Coshocton’s beautiful landscape and historic downtown. They have a great traditional square framing the downtown area ( if that’s something you look for). You can also make a great weekend trip or just a great day of visiting Ohio wineries on the Three Rivers Wine Trail. There is no lack of great activities, history, and beauty in Coshocton, OH.
