Delphi’s Indiana Bacon Festival is the brain child of creative minds, that saw an opportunity to highlight one of America’s favorite foods, bacon. Delphi is doing this in conjunction with one of their very own local companies-Indiana Kitchen . This ingenious idea now includes entertaining events and scrumptious foods, such as: A Hog Calling Contest- (Yes, its exactly what it sounds like), and I was very excited to see a sweet little old lady yell her heart out to win! Other namesake events include Bacon Idol, and a Bacon Eating Contest (there is a pre-qualifying round, this is serious bacon eating).
Highlights
All vendors at the Indiana Bacon Festival are bacon related items, here are a few highlights: Bacon ice cream, pizza, doughnuts, tacos, sliders, cookies, and a few of my favorites- bacon crack dip, and beef hot dogs topped with bacon jam!
The festival also boasts a Brew Garden and several concerts throughout the day. Concerts included popular bands like LAVA Rock (a rock cover band), and the evening headliner Little Texas.
Another highlight to take advantage of during the festival, is the local gem the Delphi Opera House. Newly restored to its glory days, this beautiful building has shows year round, and hosts local and celebrity productions alike. The building houses beautiful architecture and original design for you to enjoy.
On the Square:
There are several great restaurants and shops to visit in downtown. The walk around the town boasts local shops and restaurants you don’t want to miss. Make sure to check out: The Urban Chique Boutique, Calico Plus and the local staple The Sandwich Shop,that has been in business over 70 years. The Sandwich Shop is the next door neighbor to The Brick and Mortar Pub, who offers a great bar, burgers and more. Lastly, for your sweet tooth, stop in at Stone House Restaurant and Bakery– another local favorite. Can’t make it to all these great places? No problem, many of these restaurants/shops have a tent on the main festival walking paths.
Where to Stay:
There are several unique places to stay in and around Delphi. What makes the lodging unique is the history, like this Victorian Home. Similarly, on this trip My Town had the opportunity to stay at Delphinium. The Delphinium, locally known as the Seese House, is a beautiful historic home that’s been converted into a bed and breakfast.
Located on quiet West North Street, and surrounded by other historic homes, the Delphinium has all the charm and grandeur you could want in a historic home. The current owner is Beverly Seese, a relative of the original owners Dr. Robert and Ruth Seese. The Seese’s owned the property for 47 years before it went through the hands of several other owners, and just recently was acquired back into the Seese family.
Some of the highlights of the Delphinium include an amazing breakfast made by Beverly, a beautiful second floor deck and coffee nook, and history of visits to the area by John Whitcomb Riley (The Hoosier Poet).
