Lately, the concept of waiting has been on my mind. Not only because I have been going through a period of waiting, specifically on how I am building my business, but also because I have been watching the world around me and intently listening to family and friends who are also going through similar feelings.
Developing Patience
Learning to wait and be patient isn’t just part of life; it’s a skill developed over time, taught, and not always easy. But recently, on a trip to Beaufort, SC, I was reminded that sometimes waiting can be wonderful; sometimes it can help you see new perspectives and opportunities; and, frankly, sometimes it can just be fun if you let it.
At this point in the fiscal year, I feel like this entire year has been waiting on something. Waiting for a website to be finished, waiting for SEO Strategies to start working, waiting for my youngest son’s school to start to free up more time, waiting for my body to heal after a very invasive surgery. Sometimes we have seasons where it feels like all we are doing is waiting and not moving forward, and for me, as an entrepreneur, it is sometimes hard to separate my feelings about my business from my personal life. It simply just all runs together.
But where there is doubt, there is hope, and where there is dark, there is light, and for me, this past week, that light was Beaufort, South Carolina.
Change Your Location – Change Your Perspective
Sometimes all you need is a little perspective, and when I saw the beauty of Small-Town Beaufort, I was immediately excited to explore and interact with what was right in front of me instead of worrying about all the things I am currently waiting on.
I recently read an article that talks about the calming effects of the ocean on our nervous system, and how just hearing the ocean, and then standing in the ocean, can immediately do things like activate the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body away from the stress-driven “fight-or-flight” response and into a state of rest and recovery. For me, this has always been true, and not just with the ocean. Any body of water has the ability to help my mind shift, refocus, or calm down. So, you can imagine how fast this can happen when you go to a place almost entirely surrounded by water. Beaufort sits on Port Royal Island, surrounded by a vast network of tidal rivers, creeks, and salt marshes. You can pretty much see water in every direction. We also stayed right in the historic downtown area across from Waterfront Park.
I have been traveling to the Lowcountry for years, but I am grateful for this trip, which offered an unexpected reprieve from constant thoughts about what’s next. To be able to just “be” in a happy place with a small-town, friendly culture that can help you take it slow.
Check back soon for a full article on what we got up to while in Beaufort and the surrounding area.
In the meantime, friends,
Explore, Experience, and be a Force for Good,
